Automotive fuel cell system and hydrogen tank value chains
Helping build a strong fuel cell electric vehicle supply chain in the UK
Fuel cells and hydrogen propulsion systems are maturing at a rapid pace, addressing difficult-to-decarbonise vehicle segments.
The UK has a strong footprint in critical elements of fuel cell stack and high-pressure tank production with the building blocks of a thriving supply chain, making it the perfect place for investments across these growing value chains to meet domestic and international demand. Find out more about the demand forecasts for the UK.
To identify opportunities for UK suppliers, we have developed two value stream maps to assist technology advancements, collaborations, and investments with the support of industry experts. These can be viewed alongside the Automotive Council Fuel Cells Roadmap to 2040.
Fuel cell value stream
The fuel cell value map covers all critical steps required to manufacture membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) and complete assembly of fuel cell systems.
Hydrogen tank value stream
A separate on-board hydrogen tank value map provides the relevant carbon fibre production processes for large-scale tank manufacturing.
The APC-managed Automotive Transformation Fund is a key enabler of the transition to an electrified future, capitalising on the opportunities identified through this report. Through this funding programme we can support strategically important capital and R&D investment projects that help industrialise the electrified automotive supply chain at scale in the UK.
Understand more about fuel cells from the roadmap report: towards 2040
The Roadmap Report, Towards 2040: A Guide to Automotive Propulsion Technologies, explores the Automotive Council roadmaps in more detail. It identifies the key trends that will determine future powertrain development and summarises how future vehicles and technologies might evolve to meet customer and environmental challenges.
