APC welcomes Automotive Council report which shows surge in British Motor Industry

Today the Automotive Council released their latest report documenting the rapid increase in demand from British vehicle manufacturers for British-made components. The positive report “Growing the Automotive Supply Chain: The Opportunity Ahead” looks at the UK automotive industry turnaround and the resulting boost this has on local companies.

New research reveals an increase in British cars being made with British-sourced components, which is good news for UK based manufacturers. The figures in this report show an increase in British car production by 50% since 2009. Figures like this show the recent increase in business for local companies, which in turn shows a creation of job opportunities in the UK automotive industry.

With 90% of components for UK manufactured cars being locally sourced in the mid 1970s dropping to only a third of components being locally sourced today, these figures show a pathway for car manufacturers to source components in the UK.

The Business Secretary Vince Cable said:

Our automotive industry has seen a resurgence in recent years and that success means work of some £1 billion has returned to the UK. This is testament to the strength and capability of our supply chain manufacturers and will no doubt lead to new jobs and further growth. This has not happened by accident but is the result of government and industry working together through the Automotive Council to strengthen our supply chain – meaning an increasing number of parts made in this country are contained in vehicles rolling off UK production lines.
