Electric Machines Spoke officially launched

The Electric Machines Spoke, situated at Newcastle University, held its official launch event last week.

Key industry figures and leading academics met to celebrate the opening of the Spoke, which will be the centre for a community of experts in electric machine technology.

Building on the UK’s world-leading capability in electrical machines; the Electric Machines Spoke will work with industry and academia to focus on both meeting the current needs of the automotive industry and defining future research programmes to extend their capability .

Officially launched by Ian Constance, CEO of the APC, who described how the Spoke Network was key to how the APC helps support technology developments and builds on the strength of the UK automotive industry, a wide range of speakers welcomed the launched of the Spoke. Presentations covered a range of topics: David Latimer of Magnomatics spoke of the journey from R&D to market for their electric machine technology; Dr Alex Michaelides of Jaguar Land Rover gave an OEM perspective on electric machine technology and described a great example of how collaborative working can help drive innovation in the Evoque-E project.  James Widmer, the lead of the Electric Machines Spoke, described how the Spoke community will work together to help address the current challenges in electric machine technology development and identify future research directions.

The event was a huge success with over 180 attendees joining the Spoke for its launch. The Spoke will be hosting events to investigate Supply Chain challenges and future research opportunities soon, with the next event planned to be the Newcastle University London campus.
