First major automotive silicon carbide (SiC) wafer line secures investment

UK Government commits to invest in first major automotive silicon carbide (SiC) wafer line in Newport

The UK government has sent a message to the world today Thursday 27 March 2025. The backing* for Vishay Intertechnology, a global leader in power semiconductors, displays a strong commitment to the Government’s vision to decarbonise the country on the path to net zero by 2050.

Funded through the Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF), which is managed by the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC), the announcement of intended investment supports the UK to sustain and grow long-term automotive capability and investment, building a strong economy through the delivery of safer, smarter, more sustainable, and affordable mobility.

The funding will transform the Vishay Newport facility, securing its future as a state-of-the-art facility for the manufacture of silicon carbide (SiC) wafer power semiconductors. Directly supporting over 500 highly skilled jobs in the region and indirectly supporting hundreds more in the wider supply chain.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said:

Under this government the UK is open for business. This is exactly the type of investment that will help us grow the economy, create highly skilled jobs and boost opportunity for people across the country, as we deliver on our Plan for Change to get more money in working people’s pockets.

Dan Bunting, Head of Business Development at the APC said:

It has been a pleasure working with the Vishay team and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) on this exciting UK investment in power electronics. Silicon carbide semiconductors are a key enabling technology for more efficient electric vehicles and this investment will establish capability in a critical part of the UK’s automotive supply chain.

Anchoring this strategic investment in the UK is central to the objectives of the Automotive Transformation Fund and represents a key milestone in support of the UK’s Industrial Strategy.
